SF State grants undergraduate degree credit for successful completion of non-collegiate instruction, military or civilian, as recommended by the Commission on Educational Credit and Credentials of the American Council on Education.
Documents needed to assess credit for military education are the:
- Joint Service Transcripts (Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard)
- Community College of the Air Force Transcript
- DD-214
Additional Sources of Credit
- SF State also awards credit for College Level Education Program (CLEP) subject examinations in Statistics and Calculus.
- Credit may also be awarded for Defense Activities in Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES) up to a maximum of 24 semester units.
- Credit for Prior Experiential Learning: Matriculated students may also earn academic credit through the Credit for Prior Experiential Learning (CPEL) Program. This program is an alternative method for students to earn academic credit for college-level learning experiences for which no academic credit has been awarded. Typical experiences include research projects, significant work or life experiences, volunteer activities, and structured internships. Only undergraduate credit may be earned with a maximum limit of 30 units, 6 of which can be earned for residence credit. Units are usually applied towards general education or elective areas, but in certain instances, units may be used to fulfill major or minor requirements. An important requirement for earning CPEL credit is to create a learning portfolio that documents and describes the college-level learning that was achieved through these experiences. The portfolio is thoroughly evaluated by a faculty member from an academic area for which the credit is being sought. For further information, contact Academic Planning.
